A portrait of an ancestor with no photos, built from a child's drawing

Historian Tom Rowsell asked ChatGPT for a portrait of Benjamin Rowsell, a 3rd great-grandfather who was a City stockbroker in the 1860s, working from a drawing by Benjamin's six-year-old son and photos of two sons as adults. Rowsell admits nobody who knew the man would recognise it.

An experiment in AI generated facial reconstruction.

ChatGPT created this portrait of my 3rd great grandpa Benjamin Rowsell, when he was my age and a stockbroker in the City.

There are no photos of him so this image is based on a drawing his six year old son made of him, combined with photos of his two sons as adults. The clothing is typical attire for men in the financial district in the 1860s.

I doubt very much anyone who knew him would recognise him from this image. Even with these source images, we can't really tell what his face looked like. With most historical reconstructions we have even less to go on. But this does give an accurate impression of what sort of a man he was.
