A check-engine fault fixed at home in under an hour for $120

Christopher Wipper, an Army veteran and home inspector, pulled code P0458 with a free AutoZone scanner, found no YouTube guides, and had Grok walk them through the evap system. The canister close valve was stuck shut. One part later the tank fills again, with no $169 diagnostic fee.

You can just fix things.

My mechanic wanted $169 just to troubleshoot my check engine light.

Took the car to Autozone and used their free OBD2 scanner to get the code: P0458 - Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low. This, coupled with the symptom of not being able to fill it with gas (backs up in fill tube.)

Went to YouTube, right? Well, there weren't any videos. :GASP: That's when Grok entered the chat, literally.

Grok helped me troubleshoot and fix the problem myself for $120 and it took me less than an hour.

Started with the Air Drain Case (#2) that sits on top of the fill port (#1): It was clear, but a little chalky.

Next step was the CCV, Canister Close Valve (sits on the Purge Canister #3.) It opens and allows air to chase the fuel when filling so it doesn't create a vacuum and just sit in the fill tube.

Took off the solenoid and it was stuck closed when it should have been open.

Called AutoZone and had the part in hand in 20 mins. One hose and electrical connector later and she's good as new! (#5)

Do some research and save yourself some money.
